Big Ben

London is synonymous with Big Ben. This is a clock tower 316-feet that was built in 1858. Today, Big Ben is the 14-ton bell sound which hangs at the top of the tower. Unfortunately, the original bell cracked in 1857 and had to be restored. There are several theories behind the name of "Big Ben ". Some of them are: the bell got its name from Sir Benjamin Hall, who was affectionately called the Big Ben in the House of Commons and was nicknamed the boxer after a former heavyweight champion called Ben Caunt.

Big Ben is in, and is an important component of the Palace of Westminster or the Parliament House. When Parliament is in session, the light shines above the symbolic Big Ben. UK residents are permitted to take a guided tour to the top of the tower with the help of a local member of Parliament. The Houses of Parliament consists of over 1000 rooms and corridors of a duration 2 miles.

The UK government is divided into two sections: the House of Commons and House of Lords. The House of Commons is an elected body, but the House of Lords appoints people without elections. Most people who sit in the House of Lords are selected by their inheritance rights or are political appointees.
