Black Victory

On behalf of white evangelical Christians everywhere, I would like to express my sincere contratulations to church in black for a deserved victory. The choice of Barack Obama the first black president of the United States is a decisive moment for the history of the world.

I was not present during the decade of the movement civil rights, but here's what I heard. At a time when its people were considered less than human by the U.S. general, who chose to love their oppressors. You face the attack dogs and fire hoses. You refused to ride in the back of buses. You broke the walls of segregated high schools with their heads held high. You sang at the mass with music? We Shall Overcome? And did you beat.

My message to the black church is simple, but urgent. To my fellow Christians I black? Would like to say thanks and please. Thank you for winning the fight for civil rights, but please, oh please, do not give up their heritage violence that made it possible. In a world where the presence of nuclear weapons puts the human race in danger, if there ever was a time for the message of nonviolence to recover its rightful place in American history, that time is now? How about you? back to those who can make it happen!

The irony is that now we have a man commanding the most powerful military in the world, the temptation is too great to be remembered that, unlike the American Revolution, where victory came in the barrel of the gun, his victory did not come by the power of force, but by the power of the right. His victory is a victory that did not come from violence, but nonviolence.

Last year I was struck by the irony of hearing a speech by John McCain praising Dr. King for his life and his legacy, when, as I recall, was Dr. King, who said:? The greatest purveyor of violence in the world today is my own government.? Dr. King was the greatest critic of U.S. foreign policy in its day and yet how often praised for his courage to face their own government?

This year I? M beaten by another irony. In a blog entry entitled? The forgotten heart king? s dream? author Greg Boyd said that each year he and his wife attend the annual Dr. Martin Luther King breakfast. This year the keynote speaker was the four-star general Colin Powell. In Powell? S speech, he attributed the greatness of America to the greatness of our soldiers throughout history, and even likened today's soldiers with the kings call to service. Colin Powell is perhaps one of the most honorable men to ever grace the U.S. military, and of course there are many honorable men and women serving in our armed forces today, but is not it? It is ironic that a message praising U.S. military could occur in a service commemorating Martin Luther King?

All tests of his books, speeches, essays, sermons and suggests that Dr. Martin Luther King believed that violence is never durable solutions. Dr. King taught us that love's redemptive violence is the most powerful force for good in the world? Especially when directed towards one? s enemies. Everyone seems to know intuitively that Dr. King changed the world for the better, but today few seem to pay much attention to how the world changed. Since 11 September, King? S values of loving enemies and turning the other cheek are now seen as hopelessly na? by mainstream American culture? even by many in the black church.

As lifetime member of the Pentecostal / charismatic tradition, I believe that historical change of much of black Pentecostalism in the pro-peace for the war to be nothing less than tragic. I have a hunch that the influence of Christian Zionism has a lot to do with this, but whatever the reason, right? s time for Pentecostals black? black church and everywhere? to claim? s heritage nonviolent.

American Christianity as we know it today is in desperate need for reform. During the first three hundred years of Christian history, Christians were thrown to the lions, and who embraced the cross and renounced the sword. The vast majority American Christians today have forgotten this. Who better than you can remember this? The media can make fun of you. The world is laughing at you. But one thing that can know for sure. If you can bring non-violence once again at the forefront of the minds of Americans, there is a white boy from Missouri Jefferson County, encouraging each step on the road.
