Welding cast iron is always a crap shoot. I do not care who you are.

There are varying degrees of so many things are made and not always obvious one that is about to weld.

There are many ways to say, as proof of spark, but I've seen anyone who could tell one type of cast iron other by spark testing.

So why is so difficult to weld cast iron? Because it has a metric ton of carbon in it. Consider this for a minute … Tool steels contain about 1 percent carbon and are considered difficult to weld by excessive hardening and even cracking problems.

Cast iron contains more than 2 percent carbon, sometimes up to 4 percent. When this carbon is present in iron hardens easily. But all that carbon serves a purpose … graphite becomes actually serves a purpose as a lubricant in the cylinder walls of a combustion engine.

However, for welding, all that carbon and graphite is horrible. Carbon percentages cause hardening of the weld metal and heat around the affected area. To compound things, cast iron is very fragile.

This does not bend, breaks. It can be good for the engines, but is unpredictable under stress.

Back the distribution of TIG welding. What is the best rod to overcome the excessive amount of carbon in the cast iron base metal? The most popular choice in rods arc welding rods of nickel seems to be also called bar NI. However, tests have shown that for TIG welding of cast iron, aluminum bronze is a very good choice.

Aluminum Bronze. Yes, you heard me, these TIG welding rods cast great job for TIG welding.

Here is why …

1. The deposit will not cure welding high carbon content.

2. The weld metal solidification has not contraction of high voltages to cause the metal to finish near these zones.

3. aluminum bronze TIG welding rods are almost as strong as steel

4. when welded in A / C, these bronze When TIG welding rods and wet flow easily and reach a minimum amount of dilution of the base model of ore. which is always a good thing.

5. aluminum bronze TIG welding rods are much cheaper than nickel bars.

A good tip for use This cast iron bar welding machine is put in GTAW A / C like you would for aluminum welding. That will make the flow of bronze metallic unmixed fill too much of the iron and carbon in the weld.
